New Strategy Emerges on Afghanistan

The key component of the new strategy on Afghanistan is the so-called ‘Karzai plan’ for a Taliban deradicalization and reintegration program that would use economic incentives to encourage Taliban members to give up their arms and cut any ties with al-Qaida.

"Is the two-state solution still valid?" asked Nasser Al-Kidwa, the long-time Palestinian official, in a rhetorical question to a standing-room-only crowd at an IPI event on February 8th. “I think the good news here, at least from my perspective, is that yes, it is still valid,” he said. “The bad news, nevertheless is that it will not be valid for a long time.”

IPI Comment: US Appeal of Blackwater Dismissal No Substitute for Effective Regulation

US Vice President Joseph R. Biden's decision to seek an American government appeal of the dismissal of charges against Blackwater was a welcome step but needs to be followed by evidence of effective regulation of the private security industry, James Cockayne, formerly of IPI, said in a magazine commentary.
